airfield is to attract Commercial Air Lines.

It was

decided at a conference in Govt.House to ask for the

construction of a strip 3,000 yds by 120 yds. It is hoped

that the layout will be such that it can be extended if

necessary at a later date. The standard aimed at is that

of a Trans-continental Civil Airfield designed for the most

adverse conditions experienced in the British Isles as it is

considered that this will meet conditions here for many years. There is a certain amount of opposition to the building of

the airfield on the part of the Chinese population, who are

most reluctant to leave their homes and land. They have been

promised generous treatment by the Govt. in providing them

with new homes and lands, and it is hoped to satisfactorily

overcome this opposition.

Work on the strip still awaits the complete harvesting of

the rice crop.
